Web Wednesday.
So I took a few days off. That's over now. Let's get back on schedule. Today I am featuring another UK Web Entertainer. Unlike the past subjects we have a man who focuses almost solely on Video Games. As you may know I am not much of a gamer. That doesn't stop me from enjoying a few Video Game related Web Shows. Guru Larry produces some of those shows. That isn't how I learned of him though. I learned about Guru Larry through a rather short lived or very infrequently updated series that is hysterically funny. We'll get to that but first let's take a look at Guru Larry in depth.
Guru Larry, or Larry Bundy Jr. as he is known in the real world, is another Web Entertainer that has had success outside of the Internet. If you watch the video above you can see Larry playing the Soda mascot Tangoman. Aside from those commercials Larry has appeared on a number of TV shows on channels like XLEAGUE.TV, Rapture TV, and Game Network. Before all that he was an artist specializing in Anime/Manga. He has worked for many companies including Oni, Bungie, and Edge. During his 'off' time he works on a Web Comic called "Natural Born Kittens". At the moment Larry is shopping it around to a number of Anime Houses.
Having said all of that what really matters to me is his work on ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com and other websites. Like most Web Entertainers Larry started on YouTube. His work there led Mike Michaud (CEO of Channel Awesome and former administrator of ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com) to make contact with him. After which Larry joined the site and released his first video "Wez + Larry's Top Ten Wacky Japanese Games". That video was the first in an ongoing series of Top 10s. To date there have been 14 episodes of Wez + Larry's Top 10 with the most recent having been released May 1st, 2012.
Following the initial Top 10 video Larry released his first "Guru Larry's Retro Corner" episode. This series features Larry and Wez (who is a frequent contributor to Larry's videos) discussing games from the past. Hence the word 'Retro'. This is by far Larry's most prolific series with over 35 episodes having been produced. Some of these episodes have been adapted from shorts that Larry did for TV. If you are looking for a short watch that will remind you of Video Game days long since past give it a watch.
Larry isn't completely stuck in the past. He has a show all about reviewing modern games. "Guru Reviews" is a show that was made specifically for ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com and it's sister site BlisteredThumbs.com. The show is mainly about modern games but there have been a few divergences. One of these I will talk about later. The others have to do with Video Game related board games. In one of these reviews Larry crossed over with fellow Brit Ashens, who I wrote about last week. Larry and Ashens have crossed over on a few reviews all of which are worth checking out. Who doesn't want to watch two grown British men play a Donkey Kong board game.
Being British has given Larry the opportunity to produce a show that deals solely with Video Games from the UK. This series, creatively titled "Games Yanks Can't Wank", is another series that features Wez. The episodes vary in length but the series is both enjoyable and informative. There have only been 7 episodes to date.
Earlier, when I was talking about Guru Reviews, I mentioned that Larry had strayed from reviewing Video Games during the series. I said I would talk about one of them later. This is later. I was originally under the impression that these two episodes were in fact their own series. I was mistaken. The episodes go under the titles "Films Yanks Can't Wank". These two episode revolve around crazy Public Service Announcements that only ever aired in the UK. The first is called Apaches and is thoroughly insane.
The second one is entitled The Finishing Line and is just as crazy. Both of these shorts feature children dying horrible deaths in a confused attempt at teaching young kids a lesson. If I ever saw these as a child I know exactly what I would have taken away from them. British kids must be really stupid, and also Holy FUCK British Public Service Announcements are awesome.
Those two videos are why I love Larry. He had a great idea and blew it out of the water. That's not to discount his other work. I have enjoyed everything of his I have seen. The man is talented, works well with others, and has a great work ethic. Not to mention that Larry was a fat guy. His weight has fluctuated in the past but he is just as awesome as any Awesome Fat Guy I have featured. Take a bit of time and give his work a shot.
