Not long ago I took a look back at Battle Beast a little remembered toy series from the 80's. Now while it's true that I do have fond memories of playing with those toys that isn't why I chose to spotlight it. No, you see recently I have become aware of a new toy line that is somewhat reminiscent of Battle Beast. Check after the jump to find out what that is and why you should check it out.
In the past few years there have been a number of small groups producing limited runs of vinyl toys. Those toys are usually more statue than toy. They are small collectible pieces of art. I never really found them appealing. Until recently. When I heard about one such line of toys from a number of sources. This line was somewhat different. It was more toy than anything else.

Glyos, as the line is called, is a very interesting beast. It is a series of small, poseable, collectible figures that can be easily customized. You see each piece is itself made of much smaller pieces. All of these pieces can be reconnected to each other in a multitude of ways. Thanks to this Glyos becomes both a collection of figures and a building toy.
The Glyos line comes from Onell Design an independent toy company and artist collective. The main force behind the team is Matt Doughty. Matt's love of durable, small-scale action figures from the 1980s, like Battle Beast, has been a big influence in the development of the series.

The series has been very well received. It was awarded the "#1 Best Mini Toy Award 2008" from Plastic and Plush and was featured in MTV's Top Ten Toys of 2010. The line has even been used by the much larger Four Horsemen Studios in their new series the Outer Space Men.

In fact a number of people are adopting the mechanics of the series to make their own toys, These toys, from places such as Callgrim and Spy Monkey, range from full figures to accessory packs. From a personal standpoint I can say that the few pieces I have are just amazingly well done. They feel heavy and substantial. I have no regrets with my purchase and am looking forward to buying many more toys from the Glyos line.
Which is a good thing. You see 2012 is looking to be a banner year for Onell Designs. The first large drop of Glyos toys is coming this Friday. It will include a number of new designs available for the first time. It is a great time for newcomers to the series to dive in.
If you are still unsure about whether these toys are for you or not check out some of the reviews and feedback below. Given how inexpensive this line is there is no reason to not give it a shot.
