I watched the Grammys last night. I'm not big on award shows. They are all too long and bloated, with the exception of the Tony Awards which are usually fun. The Grammys didn't change my mind. I want to Take a moment, a very short moment, and talk about a few of the performances.
For the most part the performances were mediocre to terrible. A lot of what I saw and heard was forgettable or annoying. In fact there was really only one flawless performance.
That was Chris Stapleton, Gary Clark Jr., and Bonnie Raitt honoring BB King by performing 'The Thrill Is Gone'. These three came off as the most professional and polished musicians of the night. There isn't a bad thing to say about this. If you only see one of the performances from last night make it this one.
That's not to say that there weren't a few good songs last night. There were.
Adele sang 'All I Ask'. This started out very shaky. Apparently there were some technical difficulties during the song. Towards the second half of the performance Adele tapped into some real emotion and pulled out a hell of a performance. If she had started that strong this would have been the best act of the night. For some reason the official Grammy Youtube page doesn't have this one up. That's too bad.
I don't listen to Kendrick Lamar. I don't listen to a lot of Rap if I'm honest. I do listen to some but not much. What he did here was filled with so much fire and emotion that I can't help but mention it. He put on a show. I have a soft spot for modern music that isn't dumb. Even if I don't agree or in this situation understand what is being said.
That is the one detractor here for me. I couldn't really understand what Kendrick Lamar was saying. Which is funny because I listen to Tech N9ne one of the fastest rapper around and have no problem understanding him. Even with that I can't deny the power he showed here.
The final performance worth talking about came from the cast of the Broadway play Hamilton. I wasn't sure if I should put this one here. Not because it wasn't good it was. The thing is it wasn't a Grammy performance. This was just them performing the play as usual. Anyway it was very good. I don't know anything about this play but I was instantly interested in it.
As far as I'm concerned nothing else that happened last night is worth talking about. The rest of the performances were either forgettable or terrible. This show was a long sit. Like Monday Night Raw long. I don't understand why people get excited for these things. Too each their own.
