Instead of doing one huge weekly wrestling recap I've decided to throw these reaction posts up after I've seen each show. That way they'll be easier to load, easier to read, and easier for me get up in a timely fashion. The first show of the week is ROH. So without further ado let's get to it.
ROH started with the last match in the first round of the Hot Prospect Tournament. Lio Rush vs. Jason Kincaid. A saw Lio Rush's match at the last Cage of Death and I've seen Jason Kincaid in a recent episode of ROH. That's the only experience I have with these guys.
I'm surprised by that because they are both amazing. I've heard a lot of good things about Lio Rush, and they're all true, but Jason Kincaid was almost an unknown quantity. Considering what he showed in this match that is shocking.
This was the best match in this tournament yet, by far. I was expecting Lio Rush to be the star of this match, based on what I've heard about him, but Jason Kincaid had a breakout performance here. This guy has a lot of charisma and style. His fluidity and unique move set made him stand out to me.
Out of all of the guys in this tournament Jason Kincaid is the one that I'm most excited to see more of. Lio Rush would be a close second.
Rush got the win but Jason Kincaid stole the show.
I'm a big Tag Team wrestling guy. I still remember by favorite team as a kid, the Smoking Guns. So I'm always looking for a new team to get behind. Will Ferrara and Caprice Coleman may be that team.
They faced off against Silas Young and the Beer City Bruiser here. You may remember the last time we say Ferrara and Coleman they were beating the hell out of each other in Philadelphia.
Now they're teaming together. Prince Nana was on commentary to remind everyone of how this story began. I still don't know where this is going, the whole Nana handing out letters thing, but I'm sure it'll be somewhere good.
Ferrara and Coleman started off a little shaky, which is to be expected considering they were enemies not that long ago. Eventually the two started to work together. They didn't do any double team moves but had each other's backs when necessary.
Normally I would say that if they are going to continue teaming they need to come up with a team name and get some matching gear. However, do to the still fractured nature of their alliance I'm not going to go there.
Silas Young and Beer City Bruiser on the other hand should have those things. They are already both wearing blue gear. It shouldn't be that hard to come up with a name. They could call themselves 'Real Men'.
The match itself was very good. All these guys can work and both teams have good chemistry.
Coleman and Ferrara won after a distraction from the Boys.
Ferrara has grown a beard, not a ridiculous one, it gives him a bit of a Tommaso Ciampa vibe. I dig it.
On a side note Coleman needs to stop doing the top rope Leg Drop. That is going to, if it hasn't already, destroy his hips. Moves like that shouldn't be a finish but a once in a while high spot.
I also want to mention that the Back Breaker/Clothesline combo Silas does looked amazing here. Ferrara made that look devastating.
BJ Whitmer just came out with Adam Page. He is talking about who Steve Corino has gotten to take him out. I instantly got the impression that Adam Page is going to be the guy. There is something about the way he is pacing around and look on his face. He has got to be tired of BJ's shit.
Corino came out, and after promising that he will one day face Whitmer (Can't wait), he revealed that, yes, Adam Page is the guy.
Page attacked Whitmer, face to face cause he's a, well, face now, and received the best (or at least the best I've heard) reaction of his career. Page beating up Whitmer, the most hated man in ROH, made him an instant fan favorite. He needed this since he's gotten lost in the shuffle.
I'm a little torn here though. When Page came out he looked like he was ready to tear Whitmer to shreds. On the one hand it makes his turn more authentic that he could no longer hide his disdain, but it also made it a little anticlimactic. Should he have hid his emotions?
That would have made this more of a swerve and gotten a bigger shock reaction. Than again that was done not too long ago with Adam Cole and Kyle O'reily.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's one of those little things that doesn't take away from the bigger story but adds to it. The surprise creates an 'Oh Shit' moment. Instead we got 'Here it comes'. As I said one isn't necessarily better than the other.
You don't get just how good a guy like Mark Briscoe looks until you see him compared to someone like Tim Hughes. Hughes is so pale and undefined that Mark Briscoe looks like a ‘body guy’ by comparison.
The Young Bucks vs. Matt Sydal & ACH, so many dives. So many flips. I loved it.
Sydal has the most beautiful Shooting Star Press.
This match was a spot fest in the best possible way. These guys threw everything at the crowd and they ate it up. I ate it up.
Sydal and ACH got the win. I didn't think they would. Sydal teams with Ricochet in New Japan so if he goes after the title it'll be with Ricochet. I guess he and ACH can get a match in ROH but they won't win.
I don't care. I just love these two teams going at it. You know it's going to be an over the top non stop match. Just the kind of thing I love.
This was a great episode of ROH. The best in a while.
Quick update, I just saw NJPW’s New Beginning in Osaka, Sydal and Ricochet have indeed won the IWGP Junior Tag belts.
How about some News?
Remember that Cruiser Weight show that I talked about last week? Well the WWE have just confirmed it. The Global Cruiser Weight Series is now official. The tournament, which will start in July, will feature a field of 32 competitors. These men will be made up of contracted on non contracted talent. I'm very much looking forward to this. Even though there will be not ROH, New Japan, TNA, or Lucha Underground guys. There is so much talent that even with those limitations the roster will be amazing.
Rumor has it that Wade 'Bad News' Barrett has given notice that he will not be signing a new contract. This has yet to be verified by a trustworthy source but it it's true it's a bit of a shocker. Wade has everything the WWE looks for in a top guy. Size, physique, look, charisma, mic skills, in ring ability, and he's even handsome (in a broken nose sort of way). Yet he never reached the pinnacles of the company. That was not his fault. He has been hindered by unexpected injuries and bad booking. It's sad that such a well rounded guy has been so misused.
I don't know if he'll continue to wrestle after he leaves the WWE but I hope so. There a lot of companies that can make use of him. He can follow in Drew Galloway's example and take the Indies by storm. We'll just have to wait and see if this rumor is true and if it what Barrett does next.
That's it for today. See you soon with the next post.
