It has been a week since my mom got out of detox. She is 14 days sober. It has been a little tough in spots. Her anxiety has been acting up. Even with that she is doing really well. I am so proud of her. There isn't much else to say. Except that today is Friday and that means it's Awesome Fat Guy of the Week. Check after the jump to see who it is and why.
On November 8, 2011 Dwight Arrington Myers passed away. Dwight or Heavy D as he was better known was one of the bigger (Pun not intended) Hip Hop stars of the early 90's. He was Born on May 24, 1967 in Mandeville, Jamaica. His family immigrated to Mount Vernon, New York in the early 1970s.
His first album "Living Large" was released in 1987 and much commercial success. It was quickly followed by "Big Tyme" which was a breakthrough that included four hits.
Heavy D and the Boyz would go on to perform the theme song for In Living Color. Soon after Heavy D Performed the rap on Michael Jackson's hit "Jam".
After much success Heavy D decided to focus on acting. He appeared in many TV shows such as A Different World, Roc, Living Single, Boston Public and many others. He also acted in a number of movies including The Cider House Rules and Life. His last role was in the new movie Tower Heist which was released earlier this week.
Even with his success as an actor Heavy never forgot his love of music. He had a hit with "Waterbed Hev" in 1997 and collaborated with B.B. King on his duet album "Deuces Wild".
In 2011 Heavy performed live for the first time in 15 years. It would also be his last performance.
I must confess that I never really thought much about Heavy D. I knew who he was but that was all. It wasn't until his passing that I took the time to find out about him. I am glad I did. He was truly an awesome guy let along an Awesome Fat Guy. He could rap, act, and dance. He was an accomplished artist in multiple fields. I wish I had been lucky enough to discover him earlier.
I do have one memory of the man. When I was much younger I used to watch Living Single with my mother. I remember him appearing on that show. I liked him immediately.
I wasn't the only one. As always check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_D and YouTube.com for more info.
