A woman called me today. She was calling to tell me mother was okay. This disturbed me greatly. I thought something horrible had happened. As it turns out my mother was just very emotional. So much so that she didn't think she could talk to me on the phone without crying. It made me feel great. No, not great. That other thing. What is it? Oh yes, I remember, terrible. I feel terrible. There is only one thing that will make me feel better. An awesome Fat Guy. Luckily today is Friday.
Let's talk about Eric "Butterbean" Esch. Butterbean is a boxer, toughman, and MMA fighter. Known mainly for his destructive power and ability to absorb damage. Mainly due to his neck. The man has an incredibly thick neck that allows him to take quite a number of shots.
Of course that was secondary to his power. He was a five time World Toughman Heavyweight Champion with a record of 61 fights, 56 wins (36 by knockout), and 5 losses. His nickname comes from the diet he had to go on to meet the 400 pound weight limit.
During his career as a 4 Round Boxer he amassed a record of 89 Fights, 77 wins (58 by knockout), 8 losses (1 by knockout), and 4 draws. That is one hell of a record. He one the IBA Super Heavyweight and WAA Heavyweight titles once each. Thanks to this he was dubbed the king of the 4 Rounders.
Butterbean became incredibly popular very early in his career. He has appeared on numerous talk shows, reality shows, and Movies. Most notably knocking out Johnny Knoxville in Jackass: The Movie.
After retiring from Boxing Butterbean tried his had at Kick-Boxing. His time in that sport can be best described as underwhelming. He fought 7 times and one only 3 of his fights. Butterbean wisely decided to move on.
The world of MMA was calling. He debuted in Japan on December, 31st 2003. He lost to a man one third his size. Sadly Butterbean had very little experience with grappling, Jiu Jitsu, and submissions. He was not deterred and continued to fight. Eventually becoming the Elite-1 MMA Super Heavyweight Champions. While his MMA record of 28 fights, 17 victories (6 by knockout 11 by submission), 20 losses (1 by knockout 9 by submission), and 1 draw may seem mediocre, that is not the case. When you remember his age and lack of ground skills, it is amazing to see how much he has done.
I should also mention that Butterbean is a reserve deputy in his hometown of Jasper, Alabama, a husband, and father of three. Eric "Butterbean" Esch is by all accounts a great fighter, a great man, and an Awesome Fat Guy.
