This week we are looking to the world of Stand Up comedy for out Awesome Fat Guy of the Week. There are many to pick from. Men like Bruce Bruce, Gabriel Iglesias, and Frank Caliendo just to name a few. All of whom are more than worthy for the honor of Awesome Fat Guy of the Week. But this week I am talking about someone different. I am talking about John Pinette.
John Pinette (born March 23, 1962) is a Comedian and actor. He has been touring comedy clubs since the 80's. His act, which includes a number of impressions, focuses mainly on the trials and tribulations of being a fat guy. He is self-deprecating and self aware. He has no problem being the butt of the joke. Why would he? He's the one making them. You see this isn't a case of "Laughing With" versus "Laughing At". No, this is laugh because I make you. Which is a staple of all great fat comedians.
John has released two comedy CDs "Show me the Buffet" and "Making Lite of Myself". He also released three DVDs "I Say Nay Nay", "I'm Starvin'", and "Still Hungry". As you can see the man does not shy away from his weight. And considering he won "Funnies Male Stand-Up Comic 1999" from the American Comedy Awards why would he?
Not content with being successful at only one thing he ventured into acting. Over the years he has appeared in numerous films and TV series. His first appearance was in an episode of "Alf" in 1990. After which he would go on to appear in the "Revenge of the Nerds" series, "Reckless Kelly", "Simon Sez", "Duets", "The Punisher", and "The Last Godfather" to name a few. He also had a role in an episode of "Seinfeld". Not just any episode. The finale episode, and not just any role. No, John Pinette played the character that would lead to the cast of "Seinfeld" going to jail.
John's biggest role was not on the big or small screen. It was on Broadway. In 2004 he joined the touring cast of the musical "Hairspray" in the role of Edna Turnbald. He would reprise the role in the Broadway production of "Hairspray" in 2005. He continued in the role until May 28, 2006.
As you can see John Pinette has had an amazing career. And yet, I have the feeling some of you may not see why I have chosen him. Well, even putting aside his immense talent, the man has appeared along side Comedy Royalty. He has shared the screen with Jerry Seinfeld, Rodney Dangerfield, Jerry Lewis, and Lewis Black. If that isn't enough than how about this. What other man do you know that has been on Alf and toured with Frank Sinatra. That's right, his big break was being asked to tour with Frank Fucking Sinatra. I rest my case.
Oh, and just cause I love you, or because I hope it will bring in traffic. You will find all of the "I'm Starvin'" special below. Enjoy.
