SciFi Saturday.

Just a quick update. My mother is doing a little better. I spoke to her this morning and she wasn't crying. So that's good. What isn't good is that my cousin (who has been a great deal of help during all of this) called to speak to her. It turns out she was unaware of what had been going on. I had to explain everything. I can barely keep it straight in my own head. Saying it out loud was much more difficult than it should have been.

Anyway, today is Saturday. From now one I will be spotlighting a form of Science Fiction every Saturday. Whether it be a movie, TV show, book, or even a beloved character. So let's get to it.

"Attack the Block" is a British SciFi action film from 2011. It is the story of a group of young street hoods fighting aliens. The movie takes place mainly in a British council estate (tenement). The movie revolves mainly around Moses (John Boyega in his first role), the leader of the gang.

The film was written and directed by comedian Joe Cornish in his directorial debut. He imbued he film with a comedic tone while still keeping an intense feel. The young cast is energetic and very talented. These are not annoying child actors. They are joined by former Awesome Fat Guy of the Week Nick Frost in a small part.

Attack the Block excels through its action scenes and unexpected violence. Violence is not foreign to these characters. They revel in it are subjected to it.

The only complaint I have is that sometimes the kids are a little hard to understand. The use of colloquialisms can be confusing. Even with that there is no reason to not watch this wonderful movie. I highly recommend it, for those looking for a fun SciFi flick.
