Damn!! Thursday.
Another Thursday and another trip through the weird, upsetting, disturbing, and funny parts of the Internet. The picture above is just one of many taken by Miles Morgan who has risked life an limb to photograph the worlds most active volcano. You can find more here. Now that the primer pic is out of the way let's get to the main event.
When you spend a lot of time on the Internet you become aware that certain parts of the world are prone to weirdness. The main example of this being Japan. However, it turns out that Africa isn't immune to weirdness. To be exact Zimbabwe has rash of very odd attacks. Apparently, gangs of beautiful women have been raping men to get their sperm. As weird as that is it gets worse. The sperm in being harvested for witchcraft. So to recap men are being raped by women for witch fuel. You can read the full story here.
I have a weird relationship with pop culture. There are things, things that are uber-popular, that just fly right by me. For instance I haven't seen Borat. I have seen bits and pieces but never sat down and watched the movie straight through. Having said that I am positive that if presented with the fake Kazakhstan anthem I would be able to tell. Apparently the people running a Kuwait based multi-national sporting event can't say the same, since the played the fake anthem during a medal ceremony. What really gets me is not how fucked up that is but how calm Maria Dmitrienko, a Kazakhstan native and winner at the event, was when the fake anthem played. I would have thrown a shit fit. You can read more here.
Meanwhile in Tibet, Tibetan protesters are performing self immolation. That is they are lighting themselves on fire. I don't think I've ever felt so strongly about something that lighting myself ablaze seemed like a good idea. Anyway you can read the full story here.
I've never been one for political correctness. I believe in just being a decent person. That is doing right when you can. Having said that I know the power of words, but I believe the right to speaks ones mind, no matter the subject, should be held above all else. It would appear that I may be in the minority. Because, as it happens, New York City has begun banning words. These words, such as "dinosaurs", "birthday", "Halloween", and "dancing", will not appear on tests anymore. You can read the reasons why here.
If you thought that was bad it gets worse. The young man in the above picture is Liam Stacey. He is heading to jail for, supposedly, racist tweets. That's right remarks made on Twitter are sending him to jail. The remarks about Fabrice Muamba, a black soccer player who had a heart attach during a game, have been deemed as being racist. Apparently that is illegal now. The remarks, which were quickly removed, were most likely done in bad taste, were inappropriate, and possibly racist, but none of that is grounds for an arrest, let alone a conviction. The judge, John Charles, said: "Not just the footballer's family, not just the footballing world, but the whole world were literally praying for Muamba's live. Your comments aggravated this situation." As a member of the world I would like to inform John Charles that I was not praying for Muamba's life. Firstly due to the fact that I am an atheist and secondly because I didn't really care about him. In a world where thousands die daily, from disease, famine, violence, and drugs, a soccer player's illness means next to nothing to me. What does mean something, what puts a fire in my ample belly, what drives me mad, is that someone can be arrested for speaking their mind. You can read more here.
Finally we end on bodily injury. Today we have wrestling of the none professional variety. In this match, between high school athletes, a leg gets destroyed. Just watch the video. All I can say is DAMN!!
