Welcome to the last "Diversity" Web Wednesday post, unless I think of another person or group of people that fit in the non-white dude group. Today's Web Entertainer is The Blockbuster Buster. Another Hispanic, possibly Puerto Rican, reviewer. He may be the most divisive person I have spot lighted here but I feel he deserves my praise.
The Blockbuster Buster or ERod is in actuality Eriq Rodriquez, who is one of the more interesting people I have posted about. ERod started his show with distinct goal of joining TGWTG. It's true that a lot of the people I have written about had that same goal, but most of them did not start out with that in mind. As time went on they became aware of ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com and made that their goal. ERod had that goal from the get go.
With that in mind ERod set out to make his dream true. To do this he created a review show that was unique but had a familiar flavor. For starters ERod set his sights on the modern American Blockbuster. A genre that most Internet Reviewers ignore. This allowed ERod to tackle large films that had raised the ire of the "Fanboys" and "Fangirls". It was a perfect way to draw in viewers while separating from the pack.
In a bid to separate himself even further ERod added a very physical element to his reviews. The inclusion of dancing and DVD destruction, added energy to what is normally a rather static process. That's not to say that other Internet Reviewers are sedentary. That is far from the case. ERod just takes it to a new level. I would even say he could stand to tone it down a bit. But only a bit.
There are a few Internet Reviewer mainstays that ERod does indulge in. The most notable being his many side characters all of which are played by ERod himself. These include Nerdlinger the go to guy for "Fanboy" info, Fedora Freddy the Hollywood idea man, El Lover the Latin lover recap man, Evil-E your run of the mill evil doppelganger, and finally Cartoon-E who is a cartoon. Instead of giving each of these characters their own shows ERod calls upon them in his regular reviews.
Earlier I mentioned that ERod was probably the most divisive personality I have featured in these posts. There is a reason for that. When ERod was first passed over by TGWTG.com he released a review for the movie Eragon, that saw him impersonate a number of ThatGuyWithTheGlasses, com personalities. When ERod was picked up by TGWTG.com he did this again in his Atlantis (which can be viewed above) review. This did not get him a lot of fans. I found the videos to be entertaining. Some didn't.
I can understand why some people dislike ERod. I didn't get him at first either. But after a while I found his delivery to be energetic and enthusiastic. He may come off as over produced and forceful but a lot of that comes from him wanting to succeed. The man has talent, comedic timing, and a love for what he does. Give him a shot. You may be surprised.
