Awesome Fat Guy of the Week.
I've been on the Internet for a long time. During the years I have seen things. Some have been disturbing, some have been depressing, and some have been disgusting, but very few have stayed with me. Yesterday I saw something that I can't just shrug off. I won't go into detail but it broke my heart. Having said that I need something to make me smile. Maybe a Comedian. No I need something more than that. A really funny Comedian. No, more than that. A really fat, really funny, Comedian. No, even more than that. I need a Comedian who is so fat and so funny that I would have to describe him as an Awesome Fat Guy. Good thing today is Friday. This edition of Awesome Fat Guy of the Week is on Gabriel Iglesias.
Gabrial Iglesias was born Gabriel J. Iglecias in San Diego, on July 15, 1976. He is of Mexican decent and was raised by his mother. In fact his mother spelled his last name with a "c" because his father was absent during his birth. Since then Gabriel has spelled his name with a "s". During his childhood Gabriel and his mother moved often before settling down in Long Beach.
Gabriel started comedy against the wishes of his family. At the time he had a job at a cell phone company that awarded him a great deal of financial security. He decided to try comedy while keeping his day job, until that became too difficult. Eventually something had to give. Gabriel left his day job and jumped directly into the unknown world of comedy. This resulted in Gabriel losing both his home and car. Not one to give up Gabriel pushed forward.
His first taste of fame came in 2000 when he appeared in season 6 of All That. The TV work would continue with appearances on the Spanish language show "Que Locos!". Following that he guest-starred on the ABC sitcom My Wife an Kids. Gabriel has also been featured on many late night shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show, and Showtime at the Apollo. He also appeared on the fourth season of Last Comic Standing but was eliminated when it was discovered that he had used a smuggled BlackBerry to communicate with his family and friends.
Gabriel has also appeared in the independent films El Matador and The Surfer King. Along with his onscreen roles Gabriel has done many voice over roles. He can be heard on Family Guy and The Emperor's New School. Recently, Gabriel has produced and hosted his own stand up series called "Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand Up Revolution". I should also mention his Comedy Central specials. He had a few.
Gabriel was also awarded the Key to the city of El Paso, Texas, a Congressional Recognition from Congressman Silvestre Reyes, and the Beacon of H.O.P.E. Award from Operation H.O.P.E.
Gabriel Iglesias is one of the funniest comedians, fat or skinny, I have ever seen/heard. He has the ability to pull you into his stories and immerse you into that world. His use of voices, sounds, and self deprecating humor create an amazingly fun experience. Watch the clips above and have a better day. Re-watching these bits has brought a much needed smile to my face. That is why Gabriel Iglesias is the Awesome Fat Guy of the Week.
